"An Alabama Student..."

"An Alabama student and other biographical essays by Sir William Osler"

Presented on 25 November 2010

On 25 November, the Lilly Foundation presented the publication of the Spanish translation of "An Alabama student and other biographical essays” by Sir William Osler, in the Faculty of Medicine of the Complutense University of Madrid.

According to doctor Gutiérrez, who has written the prologue, the importance of this work lies in the fact that "Throughout his essays, Osler transmits an entire philosophy of Medicine. He introduced ideas such as truth, honour and responsibility when practising medicine. His principles remain paramount today, and it is becoming more and more important for us to be familiar with them and reflect upon them”

Sir William Osler, an example of how to "Be a Doctor"

Being a Doctor implies assuming a twofold commitment towards medical science and towards people. The medical profession has to be guided by values such as humanity, proximity to patients, and responsibility. These are everlasting and enduring values, and today, more than never, we need to recover and reflect upon them.

In this regard, Sir William Osler´s essays and lectures convey an entire philosophy of Medicine and introduce ideas regarding truth, honour, responsibility when practising medicine or the importance of the relations between Science and Humanities. In his texts, he urges us to organise time, work and study, to be hard-working, to remain calm, to respect others, to be compassionate, to put patients´ interests first, and to continue studying and learning from one´s own experience over the course of our lifetimes.

This work, translated by Manuel Fuster Sieber (1944-2008), is one of the fundamental legacies left behind by this humanist doctor who has surpassed all others in expressing what it means to belong to the medical profession. Above all, he has given us the best expression of what it means to Be a good doctor.
