Euthanasia Book

“Aspectos Médicos y Jurídicos del dolor, la enfermedad terminal y la eutanasia"

Presented on 29 September 2008

On 29 September, the Fundación Lilly presented the book "Aspectos Médicos y Jurídicos del dolor, la enfermedad terminal y la eutanasia", directed by Dr. Manuel Gómez Tomillo (Director), Dr. Juan José López-Ibor and Dr. José Antonio Gutiérrez Fuentes, and published by Union Editorial.

The book includes a series of reflections - from both a physician´s and lawyer´s standpoint -"about how we face situations that as predictable as pain or illness, and where euthanasia stands from each point of view," explained Dr. José Antonio Gutiérrez. Professor Manuel Gómez Tomillo, lecturer of criminal law at Universidad de Valladolid, for his part, said that the novelty of the book lies in that "it summarises the current state of debate and brings together in a single contribution the legal perspective with all its branches: criminal, administrative, civil, constitutional, ...."

With patients and their family environment, and through medical support and advice, there is a responsibility to make judicious use of current technological advances, without renouncing any possibilities, but without falling into what is termed medical futility. Dr. José Antonio Gutiérrez, director of the Fundación Lilly thus defined the physician´s role in the patient´s terminal process at the presentation of the book, “Aspectos Médicos y Jurídicos del dolor, la enfermedad terminal y la eutanasia”.

The aim of the book is to contribute to the dissemination of legal instruments that are available for use." Through its almost 600 pages, twenty or so prominent lawyers and medical professionals bring different aspects together in a single book, such as the legal and medical status of pain therapy, criminal liability for euthanasia in Spain and other Western countries, and bioethics in problems at the end of life, among others. Thus, one chapter refers to the consideration of death over high-tech medicine.
